Sri Devaraj Urs Educational Trust started Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College at Tamaka, Kolar, in the year 1986. Through this college, the trust sought to make a significant contribution to medical education, research and health care to the rural population. The college is located 5km away from Kolar Town, Karnataka. The trust in its stride for the attainment of quality in education and health care services has obtained accreditation for its Medical College by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC, India) and certification by ISO 9001-2000 in the year 2006. This inspired the trust to apply for Deemed University status in the name and style of Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education and Research, comprising Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College. The University Grants Commission conducted an inspection in April 2007 and accordingly, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India conferred Deemed to be University status. With several buildings to accommodate the medical college, administrative offices, teaching/training facilities, hospital and hostels the university has two faculties of studies the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Allied Health Sciences.

Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education is a vibrant campus both academically and culturally with added residential amenities. The academy provides a safe, secure atmosphere which is conducive to freedom of expression and movement for learning and grooming a wholesome personality to the students. Hostel facilities, food courts, sports and fitness centre, modern classrooms and student counselling centre assists the students throughout their learning journey. The University Library is a unique information resource centre of the academy as it provides all the aspects of Health Science, allied health and basic sciences. SDUAHER implements effectively innovative programmes in teaching-learning and evaluation and undertakes need-based activities for the betterment of socially and educationally backward society.
