Overview:

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is a public law school established in 1986. It is India’s first National Law University and is located in Bangalore, Karnataka. The university has been constantly ranked among the best law institutes in India. The university was established under the National Law School of India Act (Karnataka Act 22 of 1986) and was notified in the Official Gazette on August 29, 1987.

NLSIU was set up with a mission to reform legal education and to anchor the transformation of the Indian Legal System through outstanding research and policy interventions. Over the years, the university has pioneered legal education in the country. Admissions are based on the National Law School of India University Cut Off, which varies according to different factors.

NLSIU, Bengaluru Campus:

The university is built on a sprawling 23-acre campus in Naagarabhaavi, Bengaluru. It is home to a vibrant student community, from India and abroad. NLSIU has a state-of-the-art library, multiple academic centres, and hostels with all the essential facilities. It is committed to serve as a breeding ground for future leaders in the legal sector. The university considers the safety of the candidates very seriously and aims to create an inclusive and nurturing environment for them.

NLSIU Infrastructure:
Library:

The library at NLSIU is called Sri Narayan Rao Melgiri Memorial National Law Library. It was established with the assistance of Mrs. Sudha Narayanamurthy of Infosys. The university library is a 3-storied building in which it houses a collection of over 70,000 volumes of books and journals covering a wide range of subjects apart from legal periodicals. Sri Narayan Rao Melgiri Memorial National Law Library also has computerized catalogues. These assist the candidates and research scholars with information in their respective research areas.

Hostel Facilities:

The university provides hostel facilities for both boys and girls. The 1st year candidates are generally equipped with separate accommodation facilities and are allotted shared rooms. Thereafter, candidates can choose between Single, Double and Triple sharing rooms.

Students are provided with a cot, cupboard, chair and desk of their own. Some of the other facilities include Hot Water, Laundry, 24X7 electricity, and internet connectivity.

Students must bring their mattresses, curtains and blankets. The wardens of each hostel stay on campus for the students to approach regarding any problem, inconvenience or ill health.

Health and Wellness:

The university has an on-campus health centre to attend to the immediate healthcare issues of the candidates. In addition, a qualified nurse is always stationed on the campus. NLSIU also has a tie-up with Fortis Hospira and GM Hospital, situated close to the campus.

Medical Insurance Policy:

In December 2020, the university introduced a new medical insurance policy to cover a variety of medical needs of the students.

Mental Health and Emotional Well-Being:

The university also reviews the mental health and emotional wellbeing needs of the student community. Candidates facing mental stress or who need emotional support can seek services offered by the National Law School of India University.

Eligibility:

Applicants must have completed LLM from a recognized university or institute. They must have scored a minimum of 55% (5% relaxation for reserved category candidates) or equivalent grades in the same. Interdisciplinary Program:

Candidates have to meet any 1 of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Candidates must have completed a Master Degree, in any discipline, from any recognized institute or university. They must have scored a minimum of 55% aggregate marks (50% for the reserved category candidates) in the same.
  • Candidates who have qualified for the Company Secretaryship examination conducted by Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and awarded Associate Membership of the Institute (ACS). Along with this, they have to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Law from a recognized university.
  • Candidates who have passed the Chartered Accountants examination conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and are awarded Membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Along with this, they have to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Law from a recognized university.
  • Candidates who completed Master of Business Laws (MBL) from NLSIU, Bangalore with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.00 or equivalent.

National Law School of India University Admissions:

Below mentioned are the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) admissions process:

  • Admissions for BA LLB and LLM programs are based on marks secured in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).
  • MPP aspirants must have qualified in the Policy Aptitude Test (PAT).
  • MBL and other Diploma Programs admissions are based on merit obtained by the candidates.
  • Ph.D applicants must have passed the National Law School of India University Entrance Exam. They need to score a minimum of 50% to be eligible for the presentation round, which will be monitored by an expert panel. Ph.D candidates will be selected by the PG Council, based on the panel’s judgement.
  • Candidates may secure admission only after the payment of the requisite notified fee before the last date. If they fail, they can apply afresh during the next academic year. Those failing in the 2nd attempt may not be eligible to seek admission to Ph.D at the university.

Internship Details:
Internship Program for UG Candidates:
  • 1st and 2nd Year students are encouraged to take up an internship in February and March every year for a period of 3 to 4 weeks.
  • 3rd, 4th, and Final Year students have to go for a compulsory internship during February and March for a period of 4 to 5 weeks.

All LLM and MPP candidates must undertake a compulsory internship during February and March.

Placement drives are organised for the UG students in their 4th Year and Final Trimester in March/ April every year. The drive for the Final Year LLM students is organised during the same period. Placement drives are also facilitated for MPP students.
